Shuttered for the Season

Even I, a Hebrew trapped in the Bible Belt, am tempted to join Downtown Presbyterian Church just to express my appreciation for all it does to support the arts. Besides providing exceptionally affordable studio space to local artists, DPC regularly hosts art shows, including Summer, an exhibit of works by members of the Society of Nashville's Artistic Photographers (SNAP). The titular theme is in full force, with bright, eye-catching images of bicyclists, flowers, impossibly blue skies and much more. Photographers Laura Carpenter, Denny Adcock, Kay Ramming, Eric Denton, Martha Smith, Nicholas Dantona and others exploit a variety of camera and printing techniques for an often otherworldly effect, finding the transcendent and mysterious beauty in life's everyday moments, which no doubt dovetails nicely with DPC's raison d'ĂȘtre.
Opening reception 6-9 p.m., Aug. 1.
