DPC Wednesday Lunch inspires 7th grader

"For Thanksgiving this year, St Edward School seventh grader, Hannah Kimbro, decided to do something special for Nashville’s homeless.

The idea came to her while helping cook and serve meals for the disadvantaged at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, a program run by Paulino Jarquin, the father of one of Hannah Kimbro’s classmates.

Care packages – with toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and other items – were given out to meal guests at the Downtown Presbyterian Church as they were leaving, along with coats, scarves and gloves.

The June Art Crawl is full of surprises, including some venues that will be participating for the first time. With fresh debuts alongside compelling offerings from Crawl veterans, expect local art stars, the return of out-of-town favorites and an officially unofficial after-party.

The Tennessee State Museum joins the June Crawl with Small Expressions 2011, an annual juried exhibition organized by the Handweavers Guild of America. Including nearly 40 pieces by international crafters, the small-scale works range from traditional to contemporary and demonstrate a variety of textile techniques. Adding Tennessee State Museum to the Crawl is a no-brainer, and we hope this month's event will inspire their ongoing involvement in the First Saturday festivities.

One of the new Crawl stops is Picture This gallery at 44 Arcade. The new art spot will feature selections hand-picked by gallery director John Reed. Picture This takes over the space vacated by Mir Gallery last month, furthering our wish that the Arcade remain a place that inspires creative types to stake a claim on Fifth Avenue. Picture This' premiere show will feature charcoal artist Derrick Clifton creating new drawings live in the gallery.

Joe Elias Tsambiras will bring his new exhibit Wired for Light to both the Twist Gallery and Twist Etc. The show is expansive, and Tsambiras' themes are similarly wide-reaching. Wired finds Tsambiras placing his lovingly drawn graphite figures within fields of colorful imagery and pure design. Tsambiras also makes repetitive use of images of A/V wires, nodding to the connectivity between us, the infosphere, and ultimately, one another.

At the Downtown Presbyterian Church, Twist Gallery owner-curator Beth Gilmore will be showing Ghosts We Live With, an exhibit of new photos and prints that find an exciting abstraction overtaking her familiar narrative portraits. In the church chapel, Ecclesiaudio: Sounds for Sacred Spaces brings musicians and sound artists together to create the "new joyful sounds" that emerge at the meeting of Christian metaphysics and improvised tones.

At 75 Arcade, COOP Gallery plays host to multimedia artist Justin Farris Braun. The artist's practice includes design, drawing, photography, sculpture and installation. We're not sure what to expect from his Exit Strategy: Migration, but Braun's one-sentence artist statement is one of our all-time favorites: "I'm all about happiness and everything but I don't feel like having sunshine blown up my ass."

Iwonka Waskowski is best-known for her work with the Off the Wall Art Group, but June finds her going solo at Blend Studio at 79 Arcade. Waskowski is a multimedia artist whose exploration of materials is informed by memory and emotion. Her finished works act as visual stand-ins for interior experiences. In Before/After, coffee is used to create narrative abstracts, mapping the artist's relationship with her sister. Waskowski's sibling suffered from Turner syndrome, a genetic disorder that claimed her life in 2009.

On Fifth Avenue, Tinney Contemporary opens SPARKED, a show of decorative abstract paintings by Jeanie Gooden. Gooden's canvases are by turns placid and energized, featuring a rich palette of colors inspired by her part-time studio in Mexico. Down the block, Rymer Gallery opens a new show by Illinois artist Catherine Forster. Combining video, prints and painting, Still Waters focuses on Forster's pet subjects — water and light. Forster's last Rymer show was a similar but smaller installation. We're still haunted by her video from the earlier show, but the paintings seemed like an afterthought. Perhaps Saturday's larger exhibit will grant Forster a more fully realized vision.

Once again, it's time for The Arts Company to welcome back Brother Mel for his annual birthday celebration and exhibit. At 83, the Marianist monk is still making work, and his latest metal sculptures are abstract affairs that are finished in bright, fetching colors or simply left alone, allowing the beauty of the raw metal to hold the eye. Stop by The Arts Company and wish Mel a happy 83rd.

The biggest surprise of this month's Art Crawl is the opening of The Bank gallery. Located at 226 Third Ave. N., The Bank is providing an after-party of sorts, inviting still-restless art-abouts to enjoy more art, music and interactive events after the Crawl calls it quits. The brainchild of J.Todd Greene, The Bank's inaugural festivities include a mural by Blood Switches, an art duo made up of Greene and Dillon Frazier. Greene's band Bulb will also perform. The party goes from 7 to 11 p.m.

Usually we see galleries chill in summer, but this almost-summer Crawl is the best one so far this year — not to mention, there are a helluva lot less cicadas in downtown's cement environment! That's practically reason enough to go.

Just wanted to share my submission for this year's DIG show. Great art all around. Congrats to the winners!

In this work, Hindu mythology mixes with Christian imagery to explore the grace and destruction inherent in compassion fatigue. In the Hindu paradigm, Kali is both creator and destroyer. In her aspect as the destroyer, Kali is over taken by blood lust and begins to destroy the universe. Her destruction only ends when her consort Shiva throws himself on the ground in front of her. The supposedly slain body of Shiva brings Kali out of her frenzy. Kali is Shakti, the primordial universal life force which brings about liberation and salvation. Yet Kali in her dark aspect is a forbidden thing that haunts our boundary regions and cremation grounds.

Here, Kali (embodied by a woman who performs the roles of activist, chaplain, teacher and homeless outreach worker) is present in the midst of destruction, yet is not the cause of the destruction. She is the Christ bodhisattva; terrible to look upon because of the reality she embodies and reflects. Two hands, seemingly empty, hold the nothingness that is everything, that which she truly has to give, but is seldom recognized as enough in a world of material needs and desires. Another hand holds a bowl of both baptism and cremation ashes, representing the eternal cycle of salvation and destruction. Another hand holds a staff, the shepherd’s crosier, marking the seemingly futile watching and gathering of lambs that nonetheless are taken to slaughter. Everyone healed is eventually destroyed. Another hand, raised defiantly, clutches the holy palm branch of Passover; symbolic of the willingness to turn toward the city and embrace destruction. And finally, behold the Lamb of God, raised by the sixth arm, watching the goddess in the midst of destruction. This is the anguish of the human Christ, vessel of unending compassion whose slain corpse reminds us of the cost of true grace.

Her body carries the burdens of those she refuses to let go, one lambs head representative of a child who died in her arms, one lambs head she holds as a the head of a brother executed by the state, and one head, the head of a man whose charred body marked the very ground upon which she stands, the cremation ground of the destroyed Tent City: a holy, sanctified, terrible place where the world’s disinherited and unwanted found love and healing in equal proportions with beatings, mental illness and dis-ease. Behind the goddess and the cremation ground stretch the highways leading into and out of the city, yet all is utterly still in the eye of destruction.

The potential of unburdened resurrection lies before her, yet until she allows for the liberation from samsara; she remains, willingly, fixed within the destruction.

Dear Artist,
The Downtown Presbyterian Church (DPC) of Nashville, Tennessee is pleased to announce this year’s D.I.G. Through Art Show. This year’s theme is Compassion Fatigue. DPC’s annual D.I.G. show is now in its 12th year. The show and art provide our community with a chance to come together and “D.I.G. through art” together.

This year, DPC is looking for newly created artwork (works created between today and March 3rd, 2011) for this Compassion Fatigue-themed show. Questions for the artist to consider in the creative process: What does this phrase evoke or inspire? How this concept is visually expressed?

Artists are welcome to submit work in any medium. Entry requires a $15.00 per piece fee (two pieces maximum). Paintings and other 2-D work cannot exceed 6 x 10 feet. 2-D works must be dry, framed, and ready to hang with wire. Sculpture must be easily moveable. Installations must be approved for space reasons. Work must be delivered to the church on Thursday, March 3 at 3.00 p.m. Artists will be accepted into the show on a first-to-respond basis--please see attached entry information below (which can be also be emailed in). Works will be judged and a winner selected by a seasoned local jury—comprised of art instructors, gallery curators, and/or clergy. DPC will be pleased to present the winning artist with a purchase prize check of $1,000.

There only restrictions on the artwork are that it be newly created, and that the content be suitable for all ages, since it will be on display to the entire church body and to the downtown community. DPC reserves the right to not show any work.

The grand opening reception and presentation of the D.I.G. purchase award will be on Saturday, March 5th beginning at 6:00 p.m. This event coincides with the regular first Saturday downtown community Art Crawl, as well as the church’s monthly art show and live music activities.

The D.I.G. show began at DPC in 1998 as an extension of the church’s artists-in-residency program. Today, the church hosts nine artists who each have their own dedicated space in the building. These shows have explored different themes each year. Previous themes have included last year’s “Anti-depressant," as well as "Embodiment,” “Icons and Idols,”“Incarnation and Risk,” and “Human Sacrifice.”

Lent is the church season of 40 days (not including feast days) before Easter. This year, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 9th and continues through Holy Week, ending just before Easter Sunday, April 24th. The season is symbolic of both the 40 years of Israel’s wandering in the desert and the 40 days of Christ’s fasting and temptation in the wild. DPC feels this is an appropriate season to invite artists to join the church in wrestling with challenges and complexities of faith.

Alongside the themed art show, the church will again host a film series in DPC’s downstairs
chapel on Thursday nights during the weeks of Lent. A light meal (held at 6.00 p.m.) will be
provided weekly in DPC’s Fellowship Hall before each film (starting at 7.00 p.m.). After each film,
guests are encouraged to stay for a short discussion, sharing impressions and ideas from the
motion picture.

Studio Work Day!

Decided to remodel/ redecorate my studio space. This will involve extensive cleaning, furniture repositioning, and the building of a shelving-loftish unit!

The Robot LifeGuard Electrocuted Everyone.

This is my first foray into composing science fiction. Wait, that's not entirely true. In high school, I took the legend of Frosty the Snowman down a distinctly sci-fi path which I might choose to share more broadly some day soon. In the glorious meantime, I give you my shortest story: The Robot lifeguard electrocuted everyone. Feel free to commit it to memory and share it with others. You can place it alongside Hemingway's attempt at shortness which I reprint here without permission: "For sale: baby shoes. Never worn." Mine, let the record show, is shorter (word-wise), and will also serve as the title of an upcoming work of fiction.

SoundCrawl:Nashville to include video art and a month-long presence downtown

Nashville, TN – After a successful inaugural year, SoundCrawl:Nashville returns this October with highly anticipated new variations and a list of exceptional works.

On the evening of October 2nd, from six to nine p.m. SoundCrawl:Nashville will once again indulge the ears of music city to some of the worlds best experimental sound art. However…the directors have something new planned for Nashville this year – an inclusion of some of the finest audio/video collaborations and a month long presence downtown.

This year the directors of SC:N, local composers Aaron Doenges and Kyle Baker, opened the call for works to include not only submissions from some of the finest sound artists from across the globe, but to video artists and collaborations as well. The result is a list of compositions that will not only tickle the eardrums of the city, but also tease the eyes with movement and color.

"I'm excited to move into video as we position ourselves to bring the best in avant garde digital art to Nashville," says Baker. "These genres are at the forefront of artistic expression, and we're grateful to our sponsors for helping SoundCrawl grow in this way."

Along with new mediums of expression, SoundCrawl is expanding into a month-long exhibit and will find itself at home in the Rymer Gallery for all of October. "We're delighted by the support that our friends in the galleries have given us," expressed Doenges. "The opportunity have a great opening celebration and to expand into a month long show gives us a lot of confidence in where this art form is going and in Nashville's responsive ears."

Downtown Presbyterian Children’s Summer Arts Program

If popular caricature is at all correct and church is the place where young people are
taken to learn to hate and fear their own bodies, Downtown Presbyterian Church is going
against the grain. Led by children’s education director, Sarah Dark and with the help of
area artists J. Todd Greene, Richard Feaster, David Carlson, Mandy Rogers-Horton, and
DPC’s own Beth Gilmore, Jake Larson, and Aaron Doenges, the children of the church
are working to transform the downstairs chapel into an installation of the human body.
The show’s title? Consuming Catastrophe: The Comedy of the Heart; A Play in Ate
Parts.
Guided by the conviction that a child’s relationship with God is healthily
underway long before adults start arming them with readymade answers, Dark
customarily begins their Sunday morning classes together with a story, followed by
questions. Take Jesus’ parable of the mustard seed, for instance. “The smallest of all
seeds becomes a tree so great that many birds can make their home in it,” Dark explains.”
I asked the children, ‘How is the kingdom of heaven like a mustard seed?’” What did they
come up with?
It is growing.
It is a home for us.
It is something small that is becoming great.
“I wondered aloud how the seed knew what to grow into.”
It is very powerful.
It is what it was made for.
“I asked where the children find this kind of power.”
In the trees around us.
In the seasons changing.
In our bodies.
It was the phrase, “In our bodies” that connected Todd Greene’s vision of a
human body machine with this year’s Summer Art’s Program director Dave Carlson’s
hope for a kinetic installation. Dark explains: “After spending a few weeks on what
art might be for and how specific artists create art that is interactive and moving, it
was time to put all of our ideas together.” Reporting back to the children, she had an
announcement: “Kids, we’re going to turn the chapel into a human body that you can
walk through. Oh, and you are the mustard seeds.”
It’s Dark’s hope that the children’s creation will serve as a visual aid, for young
and old alike, in better discerning God’s redeeming work not as something that happens
in spite of our bodies but within and among them and for better imagining the breadth
and outlandish scope of God’s love. She envisions the installation as “an interactive
space that will take us deeper into the poetry of this weirdly elusive but ever-expanding
kingdom...Participants will cross the threshold of the mouth and enter a bioactive
landscape, journeying through the esophagus of darkness, beneath the soul of the
stomach, into the forest of intestines, accompanied by the music of the heart, exiting
into the quiet of a blossoming tree so inclusive that life lives forever in it.” Ideally, this
culminating event of DPC’s summer arts program will somehow, in Dark’s phrase, “put
skin and bones on the mystery of the kingdom of God.”
The show opens on September 4th in DPC’s chapel at 6:00. Food and drink will be
available as a part of the Artluck’s 1st Saturday Art Crawl.

While summer's not officially here yet, the muggy dog days have already arrived at the First Saturday Gallery Crawl. Those who braved the humidity at the June Crawl were rewarded for their efforts by two shows that find familiar local artists switching roles, changing processes and making surprising breakthroughs.

David Hellams is known in Nashville's art scene as the editor of arts magazine The Rabbit and the artist behind the distinctive, meticulously rendered drawings he's shown at the Rymer Gallery and other spaces. Hellams' new show at the Downtown Presbyterian Church is a large, ambitious project that features a number of familiar drawings alongside a body of new paintings that find him working on a higher conceptual plane.

Hellams' obsessive draftsmanship has always been his obvious strength. While the subjects here feature athletes, magicians, gangsters and contemporary cars, the content of Hellams' drawings is always action itself, whether it's a football player diving to catch a tiny bonsai tree in "Eternal Replay '86" or a magician levitating a sleeping beauty while standing on the roof of the titular vehicle in "Isuzu." Hellams' scenes float in pure negative space, and the curious renderings with their punning titles are ultimately limited in conceptual possibilities, their sardonic humor as conscribed as the drawings themselves.

Hellams' untitled paintings present solitary spaces rendered on unstretched canvas. The rooms are populated with objects and furniture that have been painted and cut from separate pieces of canvas and then adhered onto Hellams' backdrops. As we rarely find people in these paintings, they feel much like decorated stage sets just moments after the actors have taken their exits. Unlike in Hellams' drawings, here the action takes place offstage.

Hellams' canvases are painstaking in their use of perspective, and viewers find themselves pulled into his vanishing points to discover that it's been left to them to investigate and act in his lonely rooms and abandoned spaces. The result is a big leap forward in the artist's work, engaging viewers in a way that his drawings could not. Seeing all the work side by side, it's clear that Hellams has been taking chances, and they're paying off.

Erin Anfinson is known for vibrant acrylic canvases that borrow their subjects from digital images of landscapes, birds and dogs. While formally compelling, these earlier works also suggested that Anfinson was a talented artist with a unique voice in search of something more to say. With her new show at The Rymer Gallery, she seems to have found it.

Anfinson, who has been raising a 2-year-old, hasn't shown in Nashville in a few years, but she's been busy creating three new series of encaustic paintings that marry careful craftsmanship to narratives about human impact on the natural environment.

In addition to a higher degree of conceptual complexity, this work also marks a stylistic departure for the painter: Every piece is highlighted by elaborate, drawn elements that are rendered in the encaustic surfaces with a heated pen. The look of these series constitutes a radical re-creation of Anfinson's work, an act of courage in an art world where even conservative changes in style may upset the dialogue between artist, gallery and audience.

With Collapse, Anfinson explores the phenomenon of colony collapse disorder within honeybee populations. Anfinson's fictional figures take their cues from 19th century scientific drawings of parasites, hinting at the possible agent that is causing the still-mysterious disorder. By rendering her forms with a white line, Anfinson lends an ironic, lacelike loveliness to her creepy crawlers, surely the most visually compelling images in the show.

New Chemistry and Migration of the Disruptors are two other series that deal more directly with human impact on the natural world. Migration explores the way specific toxins may be affecting human health, and the fictional, internal bodyscapes in pieces like "Migration of Disruptors: Sample 2" combine chemical formula symbols with Anfinson's visceral vistas, connecting cold science to a kind of brutal beauty.

New Chemistry — the best series in the show — presents a handful of creatures drawn on backgrounds of repeating chemical formulas. The creatures have seemingly been altered by mutation, experimentation or genetic tampering. The series simultaneously explores how our actions can make our natural world unrecognizable and how an artist can transform a figure to the point where something monstrous may appear out of something familiar. In the case of Anfinson's show on the whole, viewers are confronted by almost the opposite: a dramatic metamorphosis resulting in the emergence of something beautiful.

Thankfully, the flood waters are starting to recede and no more rain is forecast till Friday. Jon and I are safe and dry at home,fortunate to come out of the flood unharmed. I have been off work since returning from NYC on Sunday, as the area Watkins is located in is under a mandatory evacuation. It feels surreal at times though; one mile north of our house is completely devastated, while a mile south has already recovered. Quite a few volunteer organizations and grassroots groups are doing amazing things for the area by letting those of us who are able know when and where to help. As of last night, I heard the death count is at 30- heartbreaking. Of the folks I know who did lose their homes and cars, most did not have flood insurance because they weren't near flood zones. Recovery will be extensive and costly. Others will be affected by loss of employment, Opryland and Oprymills alone provided thousands of jobs. I am thankful for my safety in all of this, and the fact that parts of the city remain unharmed, allowing us to provide aid for those in need. Please keep middle Tennesssee in your thoughts and prayers for the days and months to come.

Aaron Hoke Doenges to perform "SeaSounds and Other Forms" at Frist on Friday, May 21^st

NASHVILLE, TN – On the evening of Friday, May 21^st, from six to eight p.m., Nashville sound artist/composer Aaron Hoke Doenges will respond to the glass work of Dale Chihuly, on display at venues around the city, with a sound installation and performance at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts. The performance, entitled "SeaSounds and Other Forms," will feature new pieces composed by Doenges in response to the work of Chihuly.

Doenges first plunged into to the Nashville scene as founder/co-director of SoundCrawl:Nashville in October, 2009 where he premiered his piece "The Suicide of Freddie Mac". Having since established his artist residency at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, he has continued to explore Nashville's sonic and artistic boundaries through installations and performances around the city while gaining regional awareness through competitions, festivals and private commissions. Prior to this, Doenges received his Master of Music in Composition degree from Belmont University.

"As I was thinking about this show," Doenges notes, "I was thinking not only about Chihuly's work, but about what Chihuly's work helps me interpret and experience. As an avid outdoorsman and a lover of nature, his glass work sheds a new, if somewhat refracted, light on the things I already love. Perhaps I can do the same with sound."

SeaSounds comes amidst a citywide collaborative exhibition of Chihuly's work. The Frist will be showing Chihuly's works starting on May 9th. The Nashville Symphony will be performing a staged production of Bartok's "Bluebeards Castle" with Chihuly's work on May 20^th through the 22^nd. And starting May 25th, the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens will feature installations of Chihuly's work in the natural setting of their rolling Tennessee landscape.

Hey all -

Spring is here in the Nash and it's good to see things growing and the flowers and trees in bloom. It's a busy spring with a lot of plans in the works. I've had many good hours in the studio recently in anticipation of some projects current and developing. It's been great to spend some time developing some pieces as I continue to think about how I relate to my art and what it can teach me. I find, more and more, that I must listen to my work to understand what it needs. A lesson to keep in my pocket when I leave the studio, as well.

One of the things I've been working on is a mediation for Holy Week which started today. "Bound and Gagged" is something for the end of a Palm Sunday in anticipation of the week to come.

Something else to meditate on this week...the "Place of the Skull Fun Park"?? Really?!

White was announced the winner Saturday, March 6, during the opening reception and monthly Art-Luck event at DPC. Almost butchered by its studio, Universal, which actually cut an alternate version with a happy ending, Terry Gilliam’s grim 1985 Kafka-meets-Python fantasy might seem an odd choice for the Lenten Film Series, with its theme of “Anti-Depressant” — but it may prove to be the movies’ most accurate imagining of things to come. Gilliam’s horrific black comedy envisions the future as one giant, oppressive Department of Motor Vehicles, with Jonathan Pryce as a low-level daydreamer in a vast (and vastly inefficient) government agency. Visually, the movie is a staggering achievement: Norman Garwood’s production design evokes an unforgettable futuristic morass of exposed ductwork and tombstone-like high-rises, and Roger Pratt’s distorted camerawork disorients us with dizzying vertical leaps (which he’d reprise a few years later in Tim Burton’s Batman) that make vertigo the ruling sensation of the future. And Gilliam’s downbeat ending carries an inkling of hope: Regardless of torture or imprisonment, the oppressors of the world can never regulate our dreams. In dreams, like Pryce’s meek hero, we soar. Free and open to the public, preceded by a free light meal at 6 p.m.

'Sullivan's Travels' Kicks Off Lenten Film Series Tonight (With Free Meal!)

The Downtown Presbyterian Church, 154 5th Ave. N., has picked the theme of "Anti-Depressant" for its annual Lenten Film Series, and we can think of few films that cheer us up more than Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels, which kicks off the series at 7 p.m. tonight (preceded by a free light meal at 6). If you want to hear how movie dialogue is supposed to crackle, click on the clip above.

The church opens its annual citywide DIG Through Art Show (DIG = Dialogue: an Interaction for Growth) this Saturday in conjunction with the First Saturday Art Crawl downtown, starting with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. In the meantime, check out the full schedule for the film series after the jump. A biography of Woody Guthrie (played by the late David Carradine), that is more than a bio-pic. This is the story of how art denounces both the apathy of the artist and the status quo of society. This is a langud and beautifly shot film that dignifies the internal and external struggle of the artist.

March 25—Bugsy Malone (1976; directed by Alan Parker)
“We Could’ve Been Anything That We Wanted To Be!” 93 min.
An all-child musical about gangsters, guns and (yes) throwing lots of pies, where everyone is just a little bit bad. Two rival gangs during prohibition take the spirit-lifting, surreal turn only an all-child musical can take. Jodi Foster and Scott Baio are directed by Alan Parker! (who also directed of “Fame” and “Pink Floyd The Wall”)

April 1—The Intruder (1962; directed by Roger Corman)
An Outsider in a White Suit Stirs a Racist Storm 84 min. (Adult Language, relevant to its time)
William Shatner stars as a white man in a white suit in a not-completely-white south during school integration. The intruder stirs the racist fears of a white community to the brink before the tension is finally broken. Parents should be advised that racist language of the 1962 american south predominates in this film. Watching this film is probably the closest you will get to the Nashville lunch counter sit in’s from 50 years ago.

It's getting harder to find a true native Nashvillian these days, but artist and Twist Gallery co-owner Beth Gilmore is the real deal. Actually, she represents the third generation of her immediate family to operate a business in downtown Music City, which might help to explain her strong sense of place and the historical awareness that informs her work and her life.

The People Issue 2010

Other historically minded locals are likely to have met Gilmore, since she's led tours at the Belmont Mansion for 12 years now. On special occasions, she even dons period dress and assumes the role of the estate's original matriarch, Adelicia Acklen — to whom she actually bears an uncanny resemblance.

Even just chatting over coffee, she's effusive about the mansion's legacy. "They were out here in the middle of nowhere displaying classical art," Gilmore beams. In our media-saturated environment, she observes, we tend to neglect the decorative arts. "But if you're a visually oriented person living out in the middle of a deer park, you want those statues, you want those crazy wallpaper designs!"

Belmont supports present-day art, too — they've hosted a show of Gilmore's paintings and prints in one of the mansion's unrestored rooms. Her senior exhibit for Watkins, where she expects to graduate in May, will feature imaginative re-creations of artifacts lost from the mansion since its original sale in 1887. Delving into letters, diaries and old newspapers for information about Belmont's former contents, she hopes that bringing attention to the missing items might contribute to their eventual recovery.

Gilmore is also artist-in-residence at the Downtown Presbyterian Church, where she keeps a studio and curates shows. The role dovetails nicely with her gallery work, since the church is just up the block from Twist's home in The Arcade. A church residency may seem unusual for a visual artist, but Gilmore — as always — brings a historical perspective to bear. "Medieval artists worked for churches," she laughs. "Even if they didn't always get to sign their work."

Despite an eye on the rearview mirror, she's not one to pine for the good old days. Gilmore is optimistic about today's art world as well as Nashville's downtown revitalization, and not without reason. She founded the thriving Twist Gallery with cohort Caroline Carlisle in 2006, joining the cooperative-minded Art at The Arcade community and other area galleries for events like the monthly First Saturday Gallery Crawl.

Twist is making its mark with exhibits and installations by emerging artists, both from Nashville and from further afield, and with live music and a separate "boutique-style" selection of affordable artwork.

Threads have a way of crossing in Gilmore's life. A childhood home on Acklen Park Drive seems to resonate with playing the part of Adelicia Acklen as an adult, or with keeping a studio at Downtown Presbyterian, where the bell given by Mrs. Acklen still rings every Sunday. Perhaps it's like what Gilmore said about her senior show: Maybe these connections emerge when we just start paying attention. —RUSSELL JOHNSTON

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –The Tennessee Titans recognized Tasha French of Nashville,Tennessee as the 2009 Titans Community Quarterback Award Winner during a special recognition luncheon hosted by the Titans at LP Field West Club on Thursday. French earned a $10,000 grant from Titans owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. and the Tennessee Titans Foundation for her non-profit organization, The Contributor. French is the founder and Executive Director ofThe Contributor, Nashville’s street newspaper launched in the winter of 2007.

"This award is such an honor,” said French. “It really is a huge support from the Nashville community and from the Tennessee Titans for this project and for our vendors. The money is really going to help us become more sustainable over the next few years and help us continue to do this project in a more self sufficient way."

French was one of four volunteers recognized today for their work with non-profit organizations. These volunteers were chosen based on their leadership and dedication to bettering their hometown communities. The Titans Community Quarterback Award program is a statewide contest that recognizes outstanding volunteers, ages 13 and up, of non-profit organizations in Tennessee. The winners were awarded with grants from the Tennessee Titans Foundation that totaled $17,500, bringing the total grants awarded since the program started in 2000 to $215,500.

“Before Tasha came around, Nashville’s average citizen knew little to nothing about homelessness in our city… Many Nashvillians now see homeless individuals not as lazy and dirty but as approachable, friendly, and even driven to rise out of their circumstances. These epiphanies- taking place in persons all around our city- are due in no small part to the diligent work, commitment, and leadership of Tasha French. When Tasha helps those who are poor and homeless make a better life for themselves, she isn’t just helping them; she’s helping the entire community. Because the problem of homelessness is not just the problem of those who suffer it, it is the problem of every neighbor and citizen of this city.”

“Each year we learn of many great volunteers doing magnificent work throughout the state and this year’s Community Quarterback Award group continues to amaze me,” said Titans Owner K.S. “Bud” Adams, Jr. “Tasha French continues the tradition of statewide winners who give so much to non-profit organizations in Tennessee.”

“Tasha is truly an inspiration to us all,” continued Adams. “Community involvement is very important to me and the entire Titans organization. We are pleased to present this grant to The Contributor in recognition of Tasha’s dedication. We salute not only today’s four grant winners but everyone that was nominated for this year’s Titans Community Quarterback Award! I say this every year, and it continues to be true – this program shows that Tennessee truly is the Volunteer State.”

There was a three way tie for second place among Monk Baird from Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity, Renee Behrman-Greiman from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee and Emmit Martin from Cancer Awareness Project. Each of these three finalists received a grant of $2,500 for finishing tied in the runner-up position.

Tasha French is the volunteer Executive Director of The Contributor, Nashville’s street newspaper. In the fall of 2007, she brought together the group of outreach workers, homeless and formerly homeless writers and artists who launched the newspaper beginning with their first issue in the winter of 2007 and continuing with their 21^st issue published this month. Tasha solicits, collects and creates news content, edits copy and designs each page of the monthly issue for press. Her efforts in creating and sustaining the paper for the past two years have created jobs and income for many who might otherwise have no way to make a living.

Dear Artist,
The Downtown Presbyterian Church (DPC) of Nashville, Tennessee is pleased to announce this
year’s winter/early spring art show, The D.I.G. Through Art Show. This year’s theme:
Anti-depressant. DPC’s annual D.I.G. show, now in its 11th year, is meant to provide the
community with a chance to come together and “D.I.G. through art.”
Artists are welcome to submit work in any medium. Entry requires a $15.00 per piece fee (two
pieces maximum). Paintings and other 2-D work cannot exceed 6 x 10 feet. 2-D works must be
dry, framed, and ready to hang with wire. Sculpture must be easily moveable. Installations must
be approved for space reasons. Work must be delivered to the church on Wednesday, February
17th at 3.00 p.m. Artists will be accepted into the show on a first-to-respond basis. Works will be
judged and a winner selected by a local jury comprised of art instructors, gallery curators, and/or
clergy. DPC will be pleased to present the winning artist with a purchase prize check of $1,000.
There are no restrictions on the artwork except that the content be suitable to all ages, since it will
be on display to the entire church body and the downtown community – young and old. DPC
reserves the right to not show any work.
The grand opening reception and presentation of the purchase award will be on Saturday, March
6th beginning at 6:00 p.m. This event coincides with the regular first Saturday downtown
community Art Crawl and the church’s monthly Art-Luck potluck dinner and art reception.
The D.I.G. show began at DPC in 1998 as an extension of the church’s artists-in-residency program.
These shows have explored different themes each year. Previous themes have included last year’s
“Embodiment,” and also “Icons and Idols,”“Incarnation and Risk,” and “Human Sacrifice.”
Lent is the church season of 40 days (not including feast days) before Easter. This year, Lent begins
on Ash Wednesday, February 17th and continues through Holy Week, ending before Easter
Sunday, April 4th. The season is symbolic of both the 40 years of Israel’s wandering in the desert
and the 40 days of Christ’s fasting and temptation in the wild. DPC feels this is an appropriate
season to invite artists to join the church in wrestling with challenges and complexities of faith.
Alongside the themed art show, the church will again host a film series in DPC’s downstairs chapel
on Thursday nights during the weeks of Lent. A light meal (held at 6.00 p.m.) will be provided
weekly in DPC’s Fellowship Hall before each film (starting at 7.00 p.m.). After each film, guests are
encouraged to stay for a short discussion, sharing impressions and ideas from the picture.

It's created a gainful endeavor and resulted in a fine publication. If you haven't seen an issue of The Contributor yet, grab a copy tonight and get behind this important project. A silent auction and an art sale will raise funds for the paper, while Mike Farris will provide music and Mr. Mysterio will read your stars and forecast your year ahead. I’d say by now that the after effects of last weekend’s turkey debacle have begun to subside your hunger as it has mine for birds, fresh-oven rolls, and homemade pies. I think my stomach is now growling out of relief instead of anger. I figure why not celebrate this newfound relief by treating myself with and telling all of my closest friends (you) about a great deal on waffles!

Pause as my stomach giggles.

Yep, I said it! This Thursday, December 3, from 11am-2pm, the Downtown Presbyterian Church is opening its Waffle Shop for the 84th time. Begun in 1926, the Downtown Presbyterian Church is continuing its bread and butter fundraiser event by inviting you to come over and visit with them and waffles, turkey hash/sausage, grits, coffee/spiced tea, baked goods, craft items, and their ever elusive cheese wafer for the mere price of $6 per person. All of the money raised from the event goes towards the church building fund and church ministries, like feeding the homeless every Wednesday and Sunday.

As you may or may not already know, the Downtown Presbyterian Church has not only become an immense help for the local homeless by providing food, shelter, support and positive direction, it has also developed into quite the central hub for many local artists to hone their own talents within the church’s artist-in-residency program. In exchange for studio space, chosen artists are more than happy to lend helping hands within a variety of church functions and donate their artistic knowledge to others wanting to create something more for themselves. One such artist that has participated in this program and is opening a solo show this Saturday, December 5th at the Twist 58 Gallery is local talent Sarah Shearer.

Shearer, always creating work that permeates deeper than whatever the canvas reveals, has carried on along her artist statement by attempting to do work that reflects her ideas that have stemmed from countless questions flying around her own head. This show, appropriately called Sarah Shearer: Seven Questions is built around the foundation of the following questions:
What is meaningful?
What is superficial?
What makes me happy?
Why do those things make me happy?
What is beauty?
Why are some things that are beautiful labeled superficial?
Does beauty equal weakness in your eyes?

So come out to Twist and Twist 58 Gallery this Saturday, December 5th, from 6-9pm and check out the best of Shearer’s (as well as the exhibit Three Ways Different: works by Dona Berotti, Rob McClurg and Cristina Viscu too) latest efforts. Maybe you can ask the artist for some of the answers she found within her work regarding to her introspective questions. Maybe, if you’re not scared to look deeper, you will find answers to some of your own questions as well!

"7 Questions"
I hope to reflect ideas through my work. What I have been creating has stemmed from hundreds of questions flying around in my head. Some of these questions are:
What is meaningful?
What is superficial?
What makes me happy, and why?
What is beauty?
Why are some things that are beautiful labeled superficial?
Does beauty equal weakness in your eyes?
In exhibiting my work I am not attempting to present answers, rather hoping to reflect my questions.
My pieces are typically a mix of medias (spray paint, acrylic, colored pencil) on canvas. Most of all, I love the intensity and texture of oil paint.

The Downtown Presbyterian Church is presenting an installation show by its artists in residence that is focused on the notion that aesthetic elements can evoke change. Dancer Tasha French will perform a belly dance in the downtown church chapel, which to me begs for the question: Does art initiate change, or is it the evidence that change has come? Artist Elizabeth Streight will be constructing a gigantic mobile that functions as a genogram representation of her family tree, towering and swaying over the viewer. Installation Causation will open Saturday along with the Art Crawl from 6-9 p.m. Whether this art will change our world or not is yet unknown, but it’s bound to contribute a chapelful of good vibes.

Dorothy Dark in the Nashville Scene

Meet Nashville’s youngest boutique couturier—if she hasn’t moved on to something else

On display at Magpie, a sun-faded pink building on 10th Avenue South, there sits an old suitcase bulging with a jumble of handmade headbands. There are jewel-encrusted folds of velour, wound-up rivulets of ribbon, slap-dash bows of oversized houndstooth and billowy piles of satin, all glued and affixed to half-moon bands, narrow and fat.With their occasional rough edges and homemade scruff, the bands are not out of place at the sleepy store, which doubles as an art gallery and artisan's bazaar. Co-owner Rhiannon Guillet—who named the shop after the bird that collects and scavenges to make a nest—hosts some 12 to 15 artists' handcrafted, locally made wares alongside her own line of vintage-inspired, flirty dresses. There are hand-blown sushi plates, handmade trivets crafted by 86-year-old hands, hand-dyed silk scarves, a self-published novel and the CD of a local duo. Earrings may go for as low as $10, while necklaces may tower toward $100.
And then there are the headbands of Dorothy Dark.

It's not surprising that the creator of this hodgepodge of moods, materials and whimsies likes old things. Calligraphy. Benjamin Franklin. Painting for relaxation. The sport of fencing. Set up a meeting with the budding entrepreneur and you might be on the lookout for Dorothy Dark, 20-something bohemian artiste. Or Dorothy Dark, with-it retiree.

Instead, you arrive at a Belmont coffee house to find...a 10-year-old girl. Fifth-grader at J.T. Moore. Likes social studies. Recently addicted to log cabins. And as founder/creator of Mood Yogurt headbands, perhaps the city's youngest featured artisan.

Like so many entrepreneurial whims of childhood, hers did not originate from a deeply felt calling.

"Me and my mom were really bored one day, and a friend came by," Dorothy explains—munching through an order of chips and salsa at Bongo Java one early evening—with exceeding politeness, mild fidgets and the casual nonchalance of an artist who gets asked about her work all the time. Several tables away, her mother Sarah sits reading a novel. "My dad and my brothers had just left to go to the YMCA, and my friend said, 'Well, I have some plain headbands and fabric, and I was going to save them for a special day when I was really, really bored.' "

That friend was bluegrass folk songstress Julie Lee, and that boredom equaled a headband wrapped in fabric with a large orange bow on top.

"Right when I made my first one, I knew it was going to be vintage and different, because it was made out of scrap fabrics," Dorothy says. A natural recycler, she would always rely on her mother's leftover scraps from the dresses or curtains she often sews, using them as the basis for her own future creations.

Dorothy's parents Sarah and David—she an artist and singer-songwriter, he the author of two acclaimed pop-culture studies with a theological bent—had somewhat serendipitously put down roots in boutique-friendly 12South. After frequent curious bike rides a few streets over to Magpie, Dorothy and her friends finally worked up the courage to go inside. They approached Guillet using fake names to check the place out, then properly introduced themselves after approving.

"Then I guess it wasn't until about a year later, she came in with this box full of headbands, just nervous as can be with her picture and a letter to customers," says Guillet, who describes Dorothy as simply an "ultra-cool kid."

After finessing the details, Guillet has agreed to showcase her work these last few months, and Dorothy has stayed busy with Mood Yogurt, a name she chose based on a recent daydream: a yogurt that changed color along with your mood. She occasionally runs her creations by friends to see what they think, and Guillet occasionally shows Dorothy techniques to improve her craft. (Magpie hopes to host workshops like a true arthouse soon.)

"I made a totally orange one with a black button on top," says Dorothy. "My friends saw it, and they were like, 'Whoa, that's ghetto.' But ghetto is good."

When the young artist thought of her audience, she didn't think of just anybody—preppy, for instance, was not a desirable aesthetic. She thought of risk-takers. Fearless fashion forwards. "I thought of anyone who wasn't intimidated by fashionable things, or someone who was maybe into older stuff," says the avid Clash and Ramones fan.

Currently, Dorothy has only 10 or 12 headbands for sale at Magpie at a time and makes more as time arises. She recently completed the Southern Girls Rock and Roll Camp in Murfreesboro, where she learned to play bass in a band called Forever Broken. She preferred her own band name idea, The Dead Chew Toys, but no one could agree, and after flipping a coin, Forever Broken won out. "It sounds too emo to me," she laments, "but I guess I'll just have to live with it."

Dorothy doesn't necessarily think of herself as a consumer advocate. But rather than selling her handmade items for a people-can-apparently-charge-anything-these-days price of $200, they go for only 8 to 12 bucks. (She originally wanted to sell them for only $2.)

And she doesn't necessarily see herself as part of some larger ideology, yet every single headband is thought-up, contemplated, handcrafted and one of a kind. The Slow Fashion movement—a loosely collected group of advocates of Taking Time To Make Things By Hand With Local Resources—would be proud to call Dorothy a poster child.

But in the meantime, she's still just that—a child. Albeit a child who likes learning about the past while adopting thoughtful approaches to the present—a far cry from the text-crazed, electronics-obsessed stereotype of these kids today.

"Lately, I've been writing with quill pens," she says. "Like, with feathers and stuff. I've used them for letters and journal writing."

But as with her peers, it's anyone's guess how long this particular fancy will stick—so the headbands may be a very limited-run edition. Dorothy isn't interested in taking the operation global.

"I'm glad it's small," she says. "I wouldn't want to be one of those big, rich people who are so famous and everything. I mean, I would be OK with that, I guess, but that's not exactly what I want. I just want to stay with a small business that people like, that's not so crazy and famous."

In other words, she wouldn't want it to be, like, her whole life or anything. If someone told her she had to do this forever, she'd be like, "Ohhhh, I quit."

She already has two other options worked out anyway.

"I want to be a movie rater," she confesses. "You know, the people who rate a movie and decide if it's PG-13, or R, or PG. It just seems fun for your job to be discussing with other people what you think something should be rated, and what you thought of it, and watching movies all day. It just sounds kind of fun. The other job, and this is weird, too, but I kind of want to be a taste tester. For all food. It just seems fun. And I really like food. I think it would be fun for your job to be just eating stuff and saying what you think."

The world always has room for another critic—but in Dorothy Dark's case, that's only if interior design, architecture, clothing designer, shoe designer, or just living in a log cabin doesn't work out.

Nashville Arcade keeps post office

Decision cheers artists, vendors

When Beth Gilmore, curator of Twist Art Gallery in the Arcade, the historic covered mall stretching between Fourth and Fifth avenues, heard the U.S. Postal Service was considering closing its branch inside the Arcade, she feared the impact on the growing art scene in downtown Nashville.

"It's part of the fabric of downtown, and I think it will hurt us all if it's gone," she said.

She no longer has to worry. The U.S. Postal Service recently released an updated list of possible post office closures across the country, and the Arcade location was not among the 371 sites, trimmed from 416.

"If it is not on the list, that means it is no longer being considered for possible closure," said Sue Brennan with the U.S. Postal Service.

For Gilmore, who is among the many art gallery owners who call the Arcade home, the post office remaining open helps revitalize downtown Nashville, "which I think people in the arts are interested in," she said.

The U.S. Postal Service has been battling ever-growing decreases in mail volume, which has led to cost-cutting measures like closing offices across the country, 16 possibly in Tennessee.

"I suspect that we were very successful in our campaign," said Kathy Bloodworth, owner of the Peanut Shop, a 21-year member of the Arcade. Bloodworth had asked patrons to fill out cards to vote to save the post office.

The post office hit the spotlight when Historic Nashville, Inc., a local nonprofit that works to promote public awareness of historic sites, included the office in its "Nashville Nine" list, a group of endangered historic properties in Davidson County.

David Price, board president and Nashville Nine committee chairman, called it "fantastic news" that the site would not close.

Janice Thompson, president and CEO of The Arcade Inc., was confident the Arcade would have survived without the post office, but is thrilled to know it is sticking around.

"The post office is an institution, just as the Arcade is an institution. It brings a lot of traffic to the Arcade. People come here who really don't have access to another post office, all kinds of people," Thompson said.

Still facing possible closure are three Nashville area sites: Donelson, Glenview, Northeast.

No timeline has been set for a final decision on the closings.

Welcome to fall! It's a good week here in the Nash. The sun is a bit lower each day while the temps are cooling off - bringing longings for camp fires and wool sweaters - and our leaves are only thinking of changing colors. The anticipation is half the excitement, it seems.

It's been a big week and a half or so here. This past weekend friends and family decended into town for our inaugural SoundCrawl:Nashville. It was an exciting couple of days as we popped up time and again in the local media outlets and regional blogs (HA...I almost wrote "blobs"), got everything set up and prepared to step into the Nashville community. Just about everything came off without a hitch and it was a very good evening! It seems the church spaces were the two most popular - a place to sit and meditate and experience some interesting sound as it filled the otherwise quiet rooms. Thanks to DPC and all our hosts for everything that they did for us!!

And the "Festival in a Box" is just about everything that we presented. In personal news...now that SC:N is over for the next year or so...I am looking forward to starting back on my own sonic explorations and expressions. One of my biggest desires in that is to have a space that I can go to write and be and work. I am happy to tell you that this past week I was able to move into my artist studio at the Downtown Presbyterian Chuch here in the Nash!! DPC has several (mostly visual) artist studios in their historic building and they have kindly opened their doors to a sound-artist, as well. I am so excited to be a part of this community of creatives and about this space (and thankful to a couple dear friends for their help) and have already started working on my next project - a brainstorming session revealed in post-it notes on the wall behind me. In celebration, I have posted some of my own work for download. An EP of the last year of my work (and a steal at just over $5!). Be looking for a group installation show from the artists at DPC during the November Art Crawl!!

Mt. Olivet Confederate Illuminat Walking Tour:

The dead come alive for a historic graveyard tour of Mount Olivet Cemetery - the site of over 1,500 Confederate graves. Re-enactors, in period dress, will portray spies, soldiers and southern belles of Nashville's past. Stationed at their own burial site they will tell the story of the person who is buried there, reliving the battles and other historical events that took place during their time.

Welcome to 1979's massive art party tomorrow night....

On Saturday, Sept. 12, Twist Art Galleries and Welcome to 1979 Recording Studio are joining forces to present a visual art showing in an audio setting. The event is designed to blur the line even further amongst the arts community by engaging all 5 senses.

Upon entering visitors will experience installations by Mandy Stoller and Nick Stolle, photographs by Elizabeth Streight (DPC artist), paintings by Kelly Bonadies, and prints by Beth Gilmore (DPC artist). After marveling at all that the first level has to offer, guests are encouraged to journey upstairs for the interactive audio portion of the night which takes place in the recording studio. This shall include a performance painting by Kat Dickie, an interactive artistic collaboration/gallery facilitated by Natalie Prass, 1,000+ vinyl records that guests are encouraged to play, refrigerator art by Jay Millar, several special guests, and snacks. Bring a friend, an open-mind, and all of your senses.

"...Chinese artist Song Dong's "Waste Not," an installation at the Museum of Modern Art made up of most of the objects obsessively collected by the artist's mother over a half a century in her Beijing apartment.

"Hoarding is often considered a compulsive disorder in developed countries... But Song's exhibit reminds us that in places like China, where economic want is either a fresh memory or a current condition for many, conserving objects is still a virtue. Sometimes it can be beautiful."

I think there's beauty even in those considered to have hoarding compulsive disorders. It would be interesting to take on a similar project with someone here in the states. ... perhaps myself! :)

Post Nashville Film Festival: Filmmakers and Supporters: Part III Tom Wills: Film preservationist and ardent supporter of independent film

Tom: "I discovered the Belcourt Theater shortly before it closed. I was absolutely not a film buff at the time. But, I was a painter and an ardent supporter of the arts, which are two different roles for me. I still have an art studio in The Downtown Presbyterian Church in Nashville where I curate a film series during lent and where I met you. I was the first artist there, and now there is an artist community that is supported by the church without the church getting in its way, which is kinda rare for this town if not this country. I think it provided a psychological template for me to get involved in the Belcourt: a no strings attached embrace of the arts template. So, I guess you could say that I welcomed the Belcourt because I was welcomed as an artist by my church. Others who I joined with to save the Belcourt had their own different reasons. Those are just mine."

Music is playing a bigger role at the First Saturday Art Crawl, and Welcome to 1979 seems poised to continue its retro recording jihad at Downtown Presbyterian Church for many First Saturdays to come. A Nashville studio committed to the warm, analog recording techniques of rock’s heyday, Welcome to 1979 will chronicle these performances—live, sans amplification—straight to shiny black tape. The audience can enjoy the magical acoustics of the chapel or slip on a pair of the available headphones to check out the mix as it’s going down. This week will feature the music of John Francis, Oblio lead-singer Terry Price, and Orange Willard, a Dayton, Ohio-based hard-rock outfit that will no doubt bring the fury—even if they can’t bring their amps.

(Although not an official DPC art event, I must present this show

because of my excitement and personal vested interest. :)

In conjunction with September's FIRST SATURDAY Art Crawl, Anthony Doling, Jonathan Rodgers, Scott Simontacchi, and Elizabeth Streight present photographs using a dying medium, Kodachrome Film.

Kodak announced only several months ago its decision to discontinue the well-loved slide film. Currently, only one lab (located in rural Kansas) will officially process this film.

Documenting the Secrets of Childhood
At our most artful and receptive moments--Sarah Masen suspects—we all
understand that paying close attention to the creative wisdom of a
child is every bit as enriching as meditating, reading sacred text, or
taking in a good French film. For Masen, the Director of Children’s
Education at Downtown Presbyterian Church, moving out of comfort zones
and past an easy sentimentality in our openness to the what children
would show us is probably our best—our only—hope for emotional
development. Opening September 5th in collaboration with the first
Saturday Art Crawl, The Downtown Presbyterian Church presents: “The
Divine Within: Documenting the Secrets of Childhood”.
This years children’s art show features works of collaboration which
tweak the conventional mentor/mentored model. The guiding vision
places a child-artist in the role of instructor and a collaborating
adult as the recipient of theological instruction afforded by the
child. This partnering flips the script on curriculums often
associated with churches (Point #1 “You’re a sinner”) and presumes,
from the outset, what Masen frequently cites as “thealready holy
spirit” of the child. Prepare your hearts for illumination. Opening
begins at 6:00pm. Light fare will be provided for small and grown
wayfarers.

Even I, a Hebrew trapped in the Bible Belt, am tempted to join Downtown Presbyterian Church just to express my appreciation for all it does to support the arts. Besides providing exceptionally affordable studio space to local artists, DPC regularly hosts art shows, including Summer, an exhibit of works by members of the Society of Nashville's Artistic Photographers (SNAP). The titular theme is in full force, with bright, eye-catching images of bicyclists, flowers, impossibly blue skies and much more. Photographers Laura Carpenter, Denny Adcock, Kay Ramming, Eric Denton, Martha Smith, Nicholas Dantona and others exploit a variety of camera and printing techniques for an often otherworldly effect, finding the transcendent and mysterious beauty in life's everyday moments, which no doubt dovetails nicely with DPC's raison d'être.

Opening reception 6-9 p.m., Aug. 1.

DPC (Downtown Presbyterian Church) and SNAP (Society of Nashville’s Artistic Photographers) present “Summer,” a photography show -- The capture of a moment in time through light; this is the essence of photography. How someone chooses to catch this light is a decision based on experience, equipment, and is a personal and creative process. SNAP has been invited by the DPC to share some captured light with you, and we’d love it if you could come!

The photography show will incorporate a diverse selection of printing and camera methods, photographic subjects, and photographers. We will be featuring the work of Laura Carpenter, Denny Adcock, Kay Ramming, Eric Denton, Martha Smith, Nicholas Dantona, Rebekah Pope, and others.

"An unexpected preservation story"

Tonight is happening in order to keep a clinic (the ONLY clinic) in Marsabit, Kenya up and operating. This clinic is providing life saving support, care, and HIV/AIDS treatment to thousands who up until this year had zero access to health care. This is no small thing, and we vitally need your support. Please bring what you are able to donate for the end of the show.

Although I'm a traditional black & white, darkroom, natural light photographer, I have recently begun experimenting with strobe lighting and digital photography. This is the first real indoor shoot I've done. There are some others that I like, as well, but these grabbed me first. This was shot at the church. Jerry is a formerly-homeless vendor for The Contributor. He kicks ass.

I've gotten more interested in, accepting of and inspired by digital photography and artificial lighting this year. This is partly from getting to man the building while a handful of professional photographers have used the artist spaces for musician photo shoots. Who knew.

I know we've uploaded this flyer once before, but consider it a healthy, happy reminder!

Also, on the evening of July 11 (the night of the "official" July art crawl) we will enthusiastically welcome three musicians who will play in the chapel throughout the evening. They are brought to us by our friends at Welcome to 1979 recording studio.

All will play acoustic sets. The musicians are:

The 3 artists playing in the chapel are all very gifted and community oriented Nashville musicians.

Luke Skidmore hails from Oklahoma City, OK. His music encompasses a subtle blend of styles including Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Jim Croce, and The Beatles. Despite his modest demeanor, Luke is one of the best singers/guitarists in Nashville.

Luke is often called a human juke box because of his uncanny ability to remember lyrics/chords for nearly any song on a whim.

Natalie and James are originally from Virginia. Both artists lean a bit more towards the obscure realm of acoustic music whilst maintaining a commercial viability. To say these two are eccentric is an understatement. Experiencing their sets live is the only way to grasp these artists full brilliance. Natalie will be playing solo and James will have a 3 piece string section with him. This is an event not to be missed.

Also, for the musically inclined... do not miss the band Cheer Up Charlie Daniels playing in the arcade during the art crawl!
